The vast majority of people who sign up to these free, online courses – more than 90 percent – do not complete them. Some underestimate the amount of work involved, others realise early on that a particular course is not for them. Many people register as a no-strings experiment as most MOOCs are free. The high drop-off rates have led to criticism that MOOCs have failed to have the transformative impact on the education landscape that had been expected. But educational expert Charles McIntyre, Co-founder of EdTech Europe, disagrees with the argument that MOOCS have passed their peak and have been unimpressive so far. “MOOCS have only just arrived on the scene, they’ve only been around for a few years. The fact that people try it [a MOOC course] and taste it and then decide subsequently...

Shaking the Brick and Mortar: Moving Higher Education Online Workshop co-organised by Academic Service and the Florence School of Regulation (European University Institute) Scientific organisers: Annika Zorn (EUI) and Jean-Michel Glachant (Florence School of Regulation | EUI) THE EMERGING WORLD OF TEACHING AND LEARNING ONLINE AND KNOWLEDGE LOOPS - Session 2 Background The world around us is moving online: whether leisure activities, news and information, whether communication with friends, contributions to public debates or the purchase of goods: most of our life takes place online. The question is whether this trend also concerns academic practice. What are the benefits and opportunities for Higher Education Institutions to (also) move online? At best, many academics still consider online tools a well-intentioned toy; but even if a move online is considered to be an opportunity for research and teaching, individual efforts often remain isolated or fragmented. What is the rational for Higher Education Institutions to incorporate a comprehensive digital agenda into their core strategy, and – perhaps even more importantly – how can we concretely achieve a large-scale ‘online move’ within our institutions? To begin, this workshop will explore how different online tools (social media tools and online learning) have already entered academic practice. Secondly, we will explore the benefits these online tools and environments offer researchers and institutions to create and share knowledge, especially given their interactive, instantaneous, accessible and open characteristics. Finally, we will present several case studies, focusing on how the process of moving larger projects online can be practically achieved within traditional academic institutions. Coding, used to build software for apps and websites, is increasingly becoming an essential skill in the 21st century. Correspondingly, educators around the world are incorporating it into their curricula at all levels, even pre-school. The approach in some places is very much 'you're never too young to learn'. In this edition of Learning World Maha Barada presents three stories exploring the different ways coding is being learned by young people across the world. While Director of the Multimedia Lab, Mr. Miller assisted over 400 faculty and students working on more than 150 projects during his 5 years there. Once he founded G3 Systems, Mr. Miller distinguished himself further by earning international design awards in the area of Corporate Presentations, Educational Applications, Technical Training and Interface Design. While serving as faculty in the Dean’s Office in Engineering at Virginia Tech, Mr. Miller embarked upon his PhD studies in Human Factors Engineering, first in Industrial Engineering and then Computer Science before deferring his studies to focus on launching G3 Systems. Mr. Miller continues to focus his research and development efforts in the areas of Interface Design, Systems Integration, Training Development and Modeling and Simulation. An overhaul of a national education system is a major and potentially risky undertaking for any country. Introducing fundamental reforms is costly and not always guaranteed to succeed. In this edition of Learning World Maha Barada looks at two examples of sweeping changes to national curricula that authorities believe are on course to yield significant benefits. *Finland: school of skills* For many years "Finland has been top-of-the-class in the field of education":http://www.oecd.org/educatio… READ MORE : http://www.euronews.com/2015/10/02/a-whole-new-approach-what-happens-when-countries-reform-education What are the top stories today? Shaking the Brick and Mortar: Moving Higher Education Online Workshop co-organised by Academic Service and the Florence School of Regulation (European University Institute) Scientific organisers: Annika Zorn (EUI) and Jean-Michel Glachant (Florence School of Regulation | EUI) HOW TO MOVE HIGHER EDUCATION ONLINE: EXPERIENCES FROM PRACTICE - Session 3 Q&A to Liz Marr's (Open University) Opening Address The world around us is moving online: whether leisure activities, news and information, whether communication with friends, contributions to public debates or the purchase of goods: most of our life takes place online. The fact that people try it [a MOOC course] and taste it and then decide subsequently that they don’t want to finish that particular course – I think just reflects the fact that there is an exploration going on... And that exploration points to a new world that’s happening in learning, and we’re very much at the start of that.” Watch Part 1 on our series on MOOCs, with the example of China's NetEase Open Course here: https://youtu.be/ujMJIxIfvDY Learning World is brought to you by euronews: http://www.euronews.com/learning-world SUBSCRIBE to get more videos from WISE: http://www.youtube.com/WISEQatar?sub_confirmation=1 World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE) is an international, multi-sectoral and action-oriented platform for innovation in education that connects innovators, nurtures new ideas, and recognizes and supports successful initiatives that are helping revitalize education.
